I wanted to let everyone know that Summerside Press has a hot new devotional coming out in October.    Ok, so I wrote it … along with Andrea Boeshaar, Debby Mayne and Loree Lough. We’re so proud of Be Still … and Let Your Nail Polish Dry. It’s especially geared toward busy women on-the-go, and a portion of the proceeds are going to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund.

Being a five-year survivor of stage 3 ovarian cancer, I’m particularly touched by our connection to OCRF. And I hope you’ll all support us by buying a copy for yourself, and a copy for your best girlfriend! And please feel free to TALK IT UP with everyone you know.

Recently I went to South Bend, Indiana and was interviewed on The Harvest Show. I couldn’t have had a better time. The staff was gracious and kind, giving me a tour of the facilities and making me feel welcome, and the hosts, Kelly and Stefan offered poignant as well entertaining questions. Since the Harvest Show is live television with eight million regular viewers it was impossible not to be a little nervous. But I still had a wonderful time. I talked about my beginnings as a writer, Summerside Press, Love Finds You in Humble Texas, God’s way of redeeming impossible situations, and why you should never give up on your dreams. Yesterday I took part in the National Fiction Day celebrated by the chain of Lifeway book stores. I traveled eight hours round trip to Bellevue, WA and signed books for about 2 1/2 hours. We had a good turn out, especially considering the manager feels that it’s a poor location for walk in traffic. He was quite excited about the number of books sold and signed, and said it was the best one they’ve hosted to date. The store will be relocating in September and he’s asked me to return, as it will be situated in a busy shopping area.

The second picture shows the wonderful display of new releases. As you can see, over half of the titles are Summerside books!

The people at the store were lovely and gracious, and it was a pleasure meeting them and chatting with their customers. I do hope to return again in the future.

I’m tickled that Summerside Press is trusting me with a second title for their wonderful Love Finds You series. “Bridal Veil, Oregon” releases  Feb. 1st, next year, and will be another historical…set in 1902.

Bridal Veil is pretty much a ghost town now, with only a tiny P.O., a church and a handful of homes where a once vibrant sawmill town existed. My story will take place at the turn of the century when logging and milling were at their height.

Here’s a little ‘teaser’ to whet your appetite, and a couple of pictures of the falls and the present day P.O.

Amidst a backdrop of thievery and murder in historic Bridal Veil, Oregon, a teacher is torn between memories of a distant love and the man who could be her future.

I went to the Christian Book Expo in Dallas in March 2009. I spent one day in the exhibit hall visiting all the booths. A lot of fun meeting the people. I had my picture taken with many of my old friends in the publishing world. Then on Sunday, I signed books in the American Christian Fiction Writers booth.

The highlight of Friday was meeting the people of Summerside Press. I knew Rachel and Jason through email and mail. And I’ve known Susan Downs for a long time. Meeting Rolf and Carlton was interesting. I love this company and the products they produce.

Ohio Farmland

I recently turned in my manuscript for Love Finds You in Revenge, Ohio, and I’m so thrilled to be writing for Summerside! Writing this story, though, hasn’t come without its challenges. I live with my husband and three kids in Mozambique, Africa which means that visiting Revenge–named after a competition between two shopkeepers–was an impossibility.

Instead of first-hand research, I spent hours looking for information online. Even though Revenge is little more than a ghost town (rumored to even have its own ghost) I was able to find enough information to start writing. Another part of the challenge was that Revenge never had a booming population. In fact for years, the only major business was the general store where local farmers could buy supplies. While I found it necessary to add to the small population for the sake of the story, I worked hard to keep the flavor and history of this not-quite forgotten town of Revenge.

When Rachel told me they were planning to add photographs to the books, I loved the idea, but had no idea how I was going to get any pictures I had permission to publish. I continued my search through the historical society and another contact I had, but when I still came up empty handed, I decided to turn my quest in to a contest on my blog. The response I received was amazing. People sent emails with links of information on Revenge, offered to talk to their friends who lived in Ohio, and a couple people even offered to drive to Revenge to take the photos. I was trilled.

In the end, the winner of my contest turned out to be my husband’s cousin and her family who drove to Revenge and took over one hundred photos of the beautiful area. They spent the day playing in the creek, roaming through the graveyard, and having a great time.

The African proverb says It takes a village to raise a child. In my case, it took a village to finish my book. 

I hope you enjoy these photos from a quiet part of Ohio, near where the prairies of the west meet the Appalachian forests of the east. I’ve also included a short teaser for the book that I hope will whet your appetite!
